VALTREX DOSAGES
Suppressive Therapy : Involves taking a prescription medicine every day to help suppress
outbreaks of genital herpes before they occur. To suppress future genital herpes outbreaks, the
standard dose of Valtrex is 1 g once daily. Your doctor may recommend an alternative approved
dose, 500mg once daily, if you have had a history of 9 or fewer outbreaks a year.
Outbreak Therapy : Involves taking a prescription medication at the first sign of a
genital herpes outbreak and treating each outbreak individually. This may reduce the severity or
the duration of the outbreak. This therapy is also referred to as "episodic therapy." To treat
returning genital herpes outbreaks as they happen, the standard dose of Valtrex is 500mg twice
daily for 3 days. Valtrex is most effective when taken within 24 hours of the start of signs or
symptoms, such as tingling or burning. There are no studies that show how well Valtrex will work
if you take it more than 24 hours after the start of symptoms.
Treating Cold Sores : The recommended dose is 2 grams taken at the first sign of a cold
sore, such as tingling, itching, or burning and then again, about 12 hours later. When treating
cold sores with Valtrex, you should not take it more than one day. Be prepared by having Valtrex
on hand, so you'll be ready as soon as you feel a cold sore coming on. Contact your physician or
pharmacist for further information if you have any questions or concerns about using this
medication.

cold sore outbreak. Maybe you avoid social situations during an outbreak, or try to cover up
your cold sores with make-up. But have you considered talking to your doctor or healthcare
provider about cold sores? Since cold sores are a medical condition just like genital herpes,
your doctor can help. He or she can write a prescription for Valtrex, which attacks the cold
sore virus from within. Valtrex is the first and only oral one-day treatment for cold sores. The
recommended dose is 2 grams taken at the first sign of a cold sore, such as tingling, itching,
or burning and then again, about 12 hours later. When treating cold sores with Valtrex, you
