ANXIETY OVERVIEW
Anxiety is a bodily response to a
perceived threat or danger. It is triggered by a combination of biochemical changes in the body,
the patient's personal history and memory, and the social situation. It is important to
distinguish between anxiety as a feeling or experience and an anxiety disorder as a psychiatric
diagnosis. A person may feel anxious without having an anxiety disorder. Also, a person facing a
clear and present danger or a realistic fear is not usually considered to be in a state of
anxiety. In addition, anxiety frequently occurs as a symptom in other categories of psychiatric
disturbance.

NATURAL TREATMENTS FOR ANXIETY
Diet
Eliminating
coffee should be the first step. There is significant clinical evidence showing that it can be
all that is needed in some cases. Other foods that may worsen anxiety in excess are refined
sugar honey, maple syrup and cow's milk products.
Nutritional
Supplements & Vitamins
Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) -
GABA is an amino acid that is known to play a role in the physiology of anxiety. Presciption
drugs for anxiety such as Valium and Xanax work by affecting GABA receptors in the brain.
However, the degree to which orally ingested GABA supplements can reach the brain is
unknown.
Other nutritional
supplements used for anxiety include pantothenic acid, calcium, magnesium, and vitamin B
complex.
Herbs
Kava - Kava (Piper
methysticum) - this is one of the main anti-anxiety herbs. It has a very quick calming effect on the nervous system with an uplifting, euphoric feeling. It is also a muscle relaxant and mild sedative. It is specific for anxiety, tension, stress,
irritability and insomnia. Kava is very good for people whose mind races.. Native to Polynesia, kava appears to work in a
similar way to prescription benzodiazepine drugs such as Xanax and Valium, with similar
effectiveness. Kava doesn't appear to cause mental drowsiness unless taken in large doses. Nevertheless, it is best to use
caution until you know the extent of its effects on you. The benefits is often noticeable within weeks,
but some people notice improvement after as little as a week. Kava should not be used by people
who have had dystonic reactions from antipsychotic drugs or who have Parkinson's disease, as
case reports indicate that kava may interfere with dopamine. People taking benzodiazepines such
as Valium should only take kava under the strict guidance of a qualified professional. The United States Food and Drug
Administration (FDA), however, has issued an advisory to consumers about the potential risk of severe liver injury resulting
from the use of dietary supplements containing kava. To date, there have been more than 25 reports of serious adverse effects
from kava use in other countries, including four patients who required liver transplants.
Valerian - Valerian is a herbal
traquilizer that is best known as a remedy for insomnia. It calms the nervous system, balances
mood swings, and is not habit forming. One study found that it may have calming effects during
stressful situations. It can be blended with other herbs such as hops or passionflower. Valerian
should not be used by children, pregnant or nursing women. People with serious health
conditions, or who are taking medications for mood or neurological disorders should
consult a qualified professional before taking valerian.
St. John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum) - this is a
gentle sedative which also has a calming effect on the nervous system with restorative properties as well. It is specific for
mild depression, anxiety, tension and irritability. It works by increasing the level of neurotransmitters in the CNS such as
serotonin and dopamine.
Both Kava and St.Johns Wort are not to be used
with medical anti-depressant drugs.
Damiana (Turnera diffusa) - this is a good nerve
tonic which also has a restorative property. It can have a good calming effect and is also specific in cases of mild depression
and anxiety. Damiana is also well known for its aphrodisiac properties.
Scullcup (Scutellaria lateriflora) - this is a
relaxing and gentle sedative for the central nervous system. It is very good for nervous tension and for nervous exhaustion plus
neurological and neuromotor problems.
Verbena
(Verbena officinalis) - this is a relaxing nervous system tonic which is indicated for a wide range of nervous
disorders including nervous exhaustion and stress.
Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) - this is a
non-addictive sedative that relaxes the nervous system. It is especially helpful for nervous disorders such as heart
palpitations, anxiety, convulsions, epilepsy, insomnia, and stress.
Withania (Withania somnifera) - this is an
ayurvedic herb most commonly called Ashwaghanda. It is a very good tonic herb that is especially helpful for debility, and
nervous exhaustion due to stress.
Other herbs - Chamomile, hops,
lemon balm and suma are calming herbs that are frequently recommended for anxiety.
Physical
Activity
Exercise is perhaps the safest and
most effective method of managing stress. Cardiovascular exercise combined with calming exercise
such as walking several times per week can be very beneficial.
Aromatherapy
Plant essential oils can be
added to baths, massage oil, or infusers. A few drops of essential oils in massage oil can be
massaged into the scalp and temples before bed. Essential oils that are used for anxiety and
nervous tension are: bergamot, cypress, geranium, jasmine, lavender, melissa, neroli, rose,
sandalwood, ylang-ylang. Lavender is the most common and forms the base of many relaxing
blends.
Bodywork
Massage
therapy, shiatsu, and other forms of bodywork can relax muscle tension, relieve stress, and
improve sleep.
